Teen driving safety apps compared

Most driving apps tell you what happened after a drive: where the car went, how fast, and whether the phone was used. BuckledApp is built to prevent the two biggest risks before they happen. It checks that the seatbelt is fastened and locks distracting apps while the car is moving. It also works alongside a location app.

Two kinds of driving apps

Location and monitoring apps (Life360, Greenlight, Bouncie) show you where your teen is and report on how they drove. They are good at telling you something went wrong, after it happened.

Enforcement apps change what happens during the drive. BuckledApp locks social media, video and games at 20 MPH and only gives them back after an AI check confirms the seatbelt is on. A passenger gets their apps back right away; a driver gets them back when the car stops.

Where the others are better

If you want a live map, location history, crash detection with emergency dispatch or roadside assistance, Life360 and Greenlight do that and BuckledApp doesn’t. Bouncie also reports vehicle health and works without the teen’s phone. Bark monitors texts and social media for bullying and other dangers, which is outside what BuckledApp does.

Where BuckledApp is different

It is the only app here that checks the seatbelt. It locks distracting apps on the teen’s own phone, in any car, with no device to install, and it can tell a driver from a passenger so passengers aren’t punished. On a managed child account your teen can’t switch it off without you getting an alert.

It also doesn’t track location. Teens are far more willing to keep an app running that checks their seatbelt than one that shares where they are all day.

Questions we get asked

What is the best app for teen drivers?

It depends on what you want. For a live map and crash detection, Life360 or Greenlight. For a device that tracks the car itself, Bouncie. To make sure your teen is buckled up and not on TikTok while driving, BuckledApp. You can also use a location app and BuckledApp together.

Is there an app that blocks texting and social media while driving?

Yes. BuckledApp locks social media, video and games while the vehicle is moving, on iPhone (through Apple’s Screen Time framework) and Android. Maps, music and calls stay available. Bark offers a driving lock on the Bark Phone, a separate phone you buy from Bark.

What happened to TrueMotion?

TrueMotion is now part of Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), whose technology powers insurers’ safe-driving programs. Those programs score driving to set insurance discounts; they don’t lock apps or check seatbelts.

Questions people search for

Which teen driving app checks the seatbelt?

BuckledApp. At 20 MPH it asks for a quick selfie and AI checks for a fastened belt across the chest and shoulder in about 2.5 seconds. None of the other apps compared here check seatbelts.

Do I need hardware for a teen driving app?

Not for most. Life360, Bark, Greenlight and BuckledApp run on the phone. Bouncie uses a small device that plugs into the car’s OBD-II port.
